Special Nibs Os Sheaffer Balance Marine Green FlexRobmorrison store. Special nibs os sheaffer balance, marine green, flex. 1930s lifetiem senior, huge fine flex nib, the best! I am a trading assistant i can sell your stuff on ebay! Oversize sheaffer balance lifetime pen, early 1930s, in marine green marble with gold filled trim. This pen has a rare fine flexible sheaffer lifetime nib. After the mid-'20s, sheaffer nibs are almost all evry stiff.
This si widely thought to be a result of the company's lifetime guarantee if it made lots of the more delicate flexible nibs, the repair department would be kept busy repairing and replacing them. The typical sheaffer nib of this period is therefore heavy and nail-like in hardness. Sheaffer advertising emphasized these qualities, praising the nibs' ability to write through multiple copies, and touting their large gold content. The firmness and weight of the nibs were made into a virtue. But at the same time the company still had to claim to suit every writer, so flexible nibs continued to be produced, though in small numbers. When found today, they are among the nicest flexible nibs and most prized by collectors. Some are very soft and some aer only semi-flexible. They tend to write quite nicely, with none of the halting ink flow of softer waterman nibs, which often have poor 'return' it takes the line a while to return to its fine, hairline width after pressure is reduced. The sheaffer flex nibs usually have excellent return. There's a iwde variety of sheaffer flexible nibs. They are found in all eras, adn like other sheaffer nibs, the size and shape changed over time. From the mid-'30s on, the largest-size nib, the one used on the oversized lifetime pens, got smaller, and got a narrower tail at the back. fI you compare an oversized lifetime nib from 1929, one that came on the first balance pens, with a conventional open nib from the mid-'40s, you'll find that the earlier nib, if original, is quite a bit bigger.
This sheaffer lifetime nib is from the early- to mid-'30s, and is the largest lifetime nib sheaffer made. It's long, wide, and broad-shouldered. It's wide all the way back, narrowing only slightly as you move toward the tail. The shaep is identical to that of the first lifetime pens, the flattops, from the '20s.You'll find flexible nibs no later lifetime pens, the striped models, but you'll never find one as large and impressive as this one. It's fine and flexible, just about as flexible as the typical waterman nib from the '20s. It makes a nice fine hairline with pressure, and can make a fairly wide fat line when pressure is added. See the samples below. It's capable of any writing that requirse shading, such as copperplate-style writing. The pen's condition is pretty good, but it has some faults. The color is excellent, with a nice bright barrel that matches the cap nicely, and that has only a little of the typical darkening found on this color. The trim i had replatde at the ohio pen show, so it looks pretty good. It appears that the clip has been replaced, since the area around where it attaches shows some swelling and wear. Teh cap has many small nicks and gouges. The cap lip has some internal lines, btu they do not go all the way through the material. Consider ti delicate. The imprint is strong. There is no personalization. It's a 'four-footer'-viewed from four feet away, it looks terrific. The pen is restored and working with a new sac installed. I used a silicone sac in order to preserve the excellent color. Length is about 5 7/16 inchse (138mm). Trading assistants on ebay are independent sellers, not employees or contractors of ebay inc. Payment.
