In 1971 a fountain pen took it's first breath, and the pen was named myu 701, its design was cutting edge with one-piece nib and section and immediately it became a fountain pen that represented pilot. 37 years latter, pilot introduces the limited production myu 90, which was modified with contemporary design, has born in 2008, on the year of pilot corporation 90th anniversary. Pilot used the same stainless steel material and one-piece nib and section just like the original, and added a blue gem at the top of the cap, whihc gives the pen very original and creative beauty. Pilot wlil eventually release 9,000 of these pens. According to pilot distributor komatsu, the initial manufacture run was of 1,000 pieces and the next run will not be until after the new years holidays. Their certainly seems more demadn than supply right now. Not long ago i had the chance to talk with one of. These pilot designers who worked on the original murex. eH said that it. Wasn't the concorde nor the parker htat inspired them, but ancient. Goose quill pens. Thye were trying to recapture the sleek white. Tips of a quill inot a modern pen. The problem with goose quills. Was that tehy quickly wore out. Our 3rd president, thomas jefferson. Was forced to keep a large flock of geese on his farm ta monticello. Just to keep him in stock with quills. The murex was suppose to. Solve the problem of the quill by making a pen that was nearly. Impervious to damage able to withstand normal pen wear for centuries. Makes you wonder what jefferson would have given for one of these. Probably the most famous of these integral nib pens. Is the parker t1.
Both the parker and the pilot were released. At about the saem time, and the debate still continues on who. Released theirs first. Parker fans point out the earlier press.
Releases while pilot fans point out that the murex was being designed. Before hte t1. Parker decided to use titanium for their material, which was a big mistake. The metal was famous for its sue in the. Apollo space program and was beginning to be used in commerical. Airplanes, and parker sought to make a pen with this strong, light. Wheight metal. What they didn't count on was just how difficult. Titainum is to work. Parker lost money on each pen they sold, and parker soon dropped teh line and cut their loses. Pilot, on hte other hand, chose a special surgical. Stainless steel, which seems to last forever. I've foudn dozens.
Of these pens in the last 10 years, and i have nveer found a broken. Or cracked one. These weer made to last.
If you liked the pilot myu701, then you aer going to love the new pilot m90. The cap has been redesigned so that it clicks onto the barrel when posting or whne closing the pen.
I appreciate that staisfying click. The clip on the new pilot m90 is now stronger and has a more streamlined design. It si now easier to clip the pen to your pocket. In the bottom picture you can see the pilot myu 701 next to the new m90.
As you can see the new m90 is slightly larger. It also weighs a little more, but in this case i see that as an advantage. The original myu701 felt a little too light to me.
Another great feature is the stylish box that the pen comes in. It has a sleek black and silver design that just fits with the m90. The pen comes with japanese papers.
